A poured concrete driveway has one structural weakness: it is monolithic. When the ground shifts — and across Pierce County it shifts every wet season and every freeze-thaw — the slab cracks, and a crack cannot be repaired invisibly. A paver driveway is built from individual units over an engineered base, so the surface flexes with ground movement instead of fracturing. When a unit does shift, you replace that unit; the rest of the driveway is untouched.

That advantage only holds if the base is right, and "right" changes by where you live in the county. Tacoma sits on glacial till and clay; South Hill and parts of Puyallup hit heavy clay layers; University Place and the Chambers Creek area sit on sandier outwash; Gig Harbor and the peninsula carry marine sediments over till. A driveway also carries vehicle loads a patio never sees. We pull a soil sample and size the base for both the soil and the load — depth, compaction, and drainage all spec'd to your site.
