A leaning retaining wall is a drainage failure, not just a wall failure. The wall leaned because hydrostatic pressure built up behind it — which means the drainage system wasn't designed for Western Washington saturation. We've repaired walls built by contractors who skipped the drainage layer. We don't skip it.

We treat every retaining wall as an engineering problem first. Before we spec a block system or wall height, we pull a soil sample. Clay content determines how much hydrostatic pressure builds up behind the wall during the wet season. That pressure determines the footing depth, the deadman or geogrid requirements, and the drainage layer design behind the wall face.
