Paver Driveway Cost: $18–$35 a Square Foot, and What Actually Sets Your Number

A paver driveway typically runs $18 to $35 per square foot installed. A two-car driveway is commonly 600 to 800 square feet, which puts most of them between about $11,000 and $28,000 — and most land in the $14,000 to $24,000 band.

That is the number. The rest of this page is about where inside that range your driveway falls, and why the answer has almost nothing to do with the paver you pick out of the catalog.

Why a driveway costs more per square foot than a patio

Same paver. Same crew. Same yard. The driveway costs $5 to $10 more per square foot. Here is exactly where that money goes.

The base roughly doubles. A pedestrian patio is typically built on 4 to 6 inches of compacted crushed aggregate. A residential driveway wants 8 to 12 inches on good subgrade — more when the subgrade is poor. That is not a small line item. On a 600 sq ft driveway, a 10-inch compacted base is roughly 25 to 30 tons of crushed rock. The patio next to it is about half that. You are paying for rock, trucking, and the hours it takes to place and compact it.

The paver gets thicker. Pedestrian pavers are 60mm units — about 2⅜ inches. Vehicular pavers are 80mm — about 3⅛ inches. That is a different, heavier, more expensive unit, and it is not optional. A 60mm paver under a truck tire is a paver that cracks.

The compaction gets slower. You cannot dump ten inches of rock and hit it once. It goes in lifts — three to four inches at a time, each one compacted before the next goes down — because a deep layer compacted from the top is dense on top and loose underneath. That is a labor cost, and it is the single easiest place for a contractor to save money without you ever seeing it.

The excavation gets deeper. Base plus bedding sand plus an 80mm paver means you are digging roughly 12 to 16 inches down, not 7. On a 600 sq ft driveway that is around 26 cubic yards of soil coming out — two to three dump-truck loads, hauled and dumped. That is a real cost and it appears on an honest quote as its own line.

That is the whole teaching. A driveway is not a patio you drive on. It is a load-bearing structure with a decorative surface.

The part nobody outside the Pacific Northwest has to think about

Tacoma gets about 38 inches of rain a year, most of it between October and April. For roughly five months, the ground under your driveway is at or near saturation. That is the condition your base has to survive, and it is the reason a base spec copied out of a manual written for a dry climate fails here.

Underneath us is glacial geology, and it is not uniform. Vashon till — the hardpan — is dense and drains badly; it perches water rather than letting it through. Advance outwash is sand and gravel and drains beautifully. There are clay and silt lenses laid down in old glacial lakes. Two houses on the same street can sit on two different materials. This is not a marketing line. It is why we pull a soil sample before we design anything.

Here is the failure mechanism, because it is worth understanding before you read a quote:

Fine-grained subgrade — silt, clay, till — loses bearing strength when it saturates. Under repeated wheel load, the aggregate base starts punching down into that soft subgrade, and the subgrade fines start pumping up into the base. The base loses its interlock. It stops behaving like a structure and starts behaving like a bag of loose rock. Then you get ruts in the wheel paths, a dip in front of the garage, and pavers that rock underfoot.

That takes two to five years. It does not happen in year one. Which is why a thin base is such an effective way to win a bid.

Note what is not on that list: deep frost. Our problem is not Minnesota's problem. We do not get the frost depth that heaves a driveway from below. Our problem is water that never leaves. A contractor who talks to you about freeze-thaw but not about saturated subgrade and drainage is reciting, not thinking.

Two defenses matter here and both cost money:

  • Geotextile separation fabric between the native subgrade and the base. It is a cheap material that stops the two layers from contaminating each other. It is also the first thing to disappear from a cut-rate quote, because you will never see it and it costs almost nothing to omit.
  • A base that goes deeper when the soil test says it should. On saturated fine-grained subgrade, 12 inches is a starting point, not a ceiling.

How to spot a thin base in a quote

You cannot see a base after the pavers are down. You can see it in the paperwork. On a driveway, this is the most expensive thing to get wrong, because fixing it later means lifting the entire surface and starting over — you pay for the driveway twice.

A quote that is serious about the base states numbers. A quote that is not, does not.

Ask for four things in writing:

  • Excavation depth, in inches. If they will not commit to a depth, they have not decided one.
  • Compacted base depth, in inches — and the word compacted, not "up to."
  • Paver thickness, in millimeters. You want to see 80mm. If it says 60mm, or says nothing, that driveway is being built with patio units.
  • Geotextile fabric — a line item, or an explicit no.

Then ask one question out loud: "What happens if you hit soft subgrade?" A contractor who has built driveways in this soil answers that in one sentence — over-excavate, more rock, fabric, here is what it costs. A contractor who is guessing gives you a paragraph.

And watch the arithmetic. If a driveway is quoted at patio dollars per square foot, it is being built on a patio base. There is no clever way around that. The rock costs what the rock costs.

The rest of the line items

The base is the story, but it is not the whole invoice. These are the other things that move your number, and all of them should appear on an itemized quote.

Demo and haul-off. Removing an existing surface typically runs $2 to $6 per square foot for concrete and $1 to $4 for asphalt. Reinforced concrete — rebar or wire mesh — is at the top of that range because it has to be cut and broken rather than lifted, and it is heavy to dispose of by the ton.

Drainage and slope. The driveway has to shed water away from the garage and the house, at a consistent pitch. Where the grade runs the wrong way — a driveway that falls toward an attached garage is common — you need a trench drain at the door or a catch basin, and that is real money. On a lot with an impervious-surface constraint, a permeable system can be the answer, though it costs more up front because the open-graded base is deeper.

Edge restraint. A paver field is only as strong as its edge. With no vehicle on it, a spike-in restraint is fine. Under a car turning, the edge takes lateral load, and a driveway usually wants a heavy-duty restraint or a concrete toe. When the edge lets go, the outer courses spread, the joints open, and the field unravels inward. Cheap driveways fail from the edges first.

The apron and the street transition. The strip between your property line and the street is usually in the public right-of-way. It is often a different detail than the rest of the driveway, it may require a right-of-way permit, and the jurisdiction may have an opinion about how it is built. It also has to tie into the existing street grade cleanly, without a lip that catches a low bumper. This is the section homeowners forget to ask about and the section that shows up as a change order later.

The garage transition. Your new driveway has to meet the existing garage slab at the right elevation. You cannot simply build up three inches to save on excavation — you would dam water at the garage door. Sometimes the fix is a saw-cut and a transition detail. It is a small thing that costs real hours.

Access. If a truck can back to the work, the job is cheaper. Narrow side yards, gates, tight urban lots, steep approaches, overhead lines — anything that forces 30 tons of rock to move by mini-skid or wheelbarrow instead of by truck is a labor multiplier, and it is legitimate.

How do I spot a cheap driveway quote that is going to fail?

Look for numbers. A quote that does not state excavation depth in inches, base depth in inches, and paver thickness in millimeters is not a spec — it is a hope. Also look for a geotextile fabric line, a compaction method, and what happens if the crew hits soft subgrade. Are pavers more expensive than a poured concrete or asphalt driveway?

Up front, yes. Paver driveways typically run 20-40% above poured concrete and 50-80% above asphalt at installation. The comparison changes over a 20-year horizon. Concrete is one monolithic slab: when it cracks — and in this climate it does — you patch it visibly or you replace it. A paver driveway is thousands of individual units on a flexible base; a damaged unit gets lifted and swapped, and the rest of the driveway is untouched.

Do I need a permit for a paver driveway?

The driveway surface on your own property usually does not require a building permit. Two things commonly do: work in the public right-of-way — the apron between the sidewalk and the street — and crossing a jurisdiction impervious-surface threshold, which can trigger stormwater review. These are jurisdiction-specific and we confirm them with your city or the county before we hand you a number, so a permit fee is not a surprise line item later.
